What is the PSHSS NCE?

The Philippine Science High School System National Competitive Examination is the highly selective process of recruiting and selecting the PSHS Scholars for the seven existing campuses of the Philippine Science High School System.

It is composed of a two-step written examination composed of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and the Science and Mathematics Aptitude Test (SMAT). The Scholastic Aptitude Test is composed of three subtests: (1) Verbal, (2) Mathematics, and (3) Non-Verbal. The Science and Mathematics Aptitude Test is composed of two subtests: (1) Mathematics and (2) Sciences.

The first screening is given in the 70 test centers all over the country. The second screening is given only to examinees who passed the first screening.

What is the coverage of the NCE?

The questions are based on the expected learning competencies of a graduating elementary student specifically in the areas of English, Mathematics and Science. The non-verbal examination is composed of figures and illustrations.

The PSHSS Test Developers uses the desired learning competencies prescribed by the Department of Education, Culture and Sports to all public and private elementary schools all over the country as guide in the formulation of test questions. No memorization of facts and figures is required of the examinees as the examination is not content dependent but process oriented.

Is there a time limit to each part of the test?

First Screening

Verbal  35 minutes
Non-verbal  25 minutes
Math 45 minutes

Second Screening

Science 60 minutes
Math 60 minutes

My child is in grade six and the school has grade seven. Is he/she qualified to take the examination?

Yes, provided your child has not taken the examination in the past and provided further that your child meets the prescribed qualification.

What if my child qualifies, will he still be required to finish grade seven?

Not anymore because PSHSS based its admission on the regular program for the elementary students that is a six-year elementary education. There is no minimum age requirement but applicants are required to be not more that 15 years by the June 2001.

What do I need to present when I come to submit the application form?

All applicants are required to submit the fully accomplished form, a certificate of good moral character, the parents’ statement that the child has no pending application as an immigrant in another country and two self-stamped window envelopes. All entries required must be provided; erasures must be initialed by the School Principal. A processing fee of Php 50.00 shall be required from all qualified applicants.

Is the presence of the child-applicant required in the processing of the application?

The child-applicant is not required to present himself personally when submitting the application; it is enough that the parent-representative submits the fully accomplished form and the required certifications from the parents and principal.

Accomplished form means that all the needed information have been filled up and verified by the School Principal.

How many students will be accepted for SY 2001-2002?

The Diliman Campus accepts 240 scholars while the Regional Campuses accept 90 scholars each.
A class or section is limited to 30 students.

How do you choose the qualifiers for each campus?

The PSHS System is using two schemes in choosing the qualifiers for the different campuses:
For the Diliman Campus: National Ranking Scheme where all the examinees are ranked from highest to lowest using the total scores obtained in the Final Screening of the examinees as basis. The cut-off score is the score of the 240th examinee. The scores obtained in the subtest must be within the mean. Examinees who get a score below the mean in a subtest is automatically disqualified even if the total score obtained is within the cut-off.

For the Regional Campuses: Regional Ranking where all the examinees belonging to the regions near the Campus are ranked from highest to lowest. The top 90 examinees are chosen based on the total scores obtained in the examination.
